What are ATAL TINKERING Labs?

The Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) initiative, launched under the Atal Innovation Mission of NITI Aayog, is a flagship program aimed at transforming schools into hubs of creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. ATLs are designed to nurture a spirit of curiosity and hands-on learning among students from a young age, empowering them with STEM skills, design thinking abilities, and real-world technological exposure. Through these labs, schools are being equipped to develop future-ready innovators, thinkers, and creators aligned with India’s vision for a technologically advanced and entrepreneurial 21st century.

Key Objectives:

  • ✓ Implement experiential, holistic, integrated, and learner-centered teaching methodologies
  • ✓ Develop 21st-century skills including critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy
  • ✓ Foster inquiry-based, discovery-oriented, and collaborative learning approaches
  • ✓ Integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, coding, and ICT technologies
  • ✓ Support competency-based assessments focused on conceptual understanding
  • ✓ Create inclusive learning environments for students from diverse backgrounds
 
  • School Types Eligible:
    • Central Government/Central PSU schools, State Government schools, Local Body (Municipality/Nagar Nigam) schools, Private-aided schools, Private-unaided schools, and Tribal/Social Welfare Department schools
    • Schools offering minimum Grade VI to X
  • Student Enrollment Requirements:
    • Minimum 400 students in Grade VI-X for plain states
    • Minimum 250 students in Grade VI-X for hilly states
    • Regular attendance of 75% and above of staff and enrolled students over the past 3 years
  • Infrastructure Requirements:
    • All weather area of 1,500 sq. ft. for plain states
    • All weather area of 1,000 sq. ft. for hilly/Himalayan and island states/UTs
    • Computer Lab with internet facility (minimum 2 MBPS)
    • Steady electricity connection
    • Science Laboratory
    • Library and Playground facilities
  • Faculty Requirements:
    • Dedicated and qualified staff in Mathematics and Sciences
    • ATL In-charge teacher with science/mathematics/computer science background
    • Principal with graduate or higher qualification
 

Step 1: Online Application Submission

  • Visit http://www.niti.gov.in and submit application online to Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog
  • Complete detailed application form with all mandatory fields
  • Provide school contact details, UDISE number, and performance data
  • Upload declaration form on school letterhead

Step 2: Screening and Evaluation

  • Applications screened based on screening criteria, then evaluated on selection criteria
  • Performance evaluation based on:
    • Percentage of students scoring 60-69.99%, 70-79.99%, 80-89.99%, and 90% & above in Grade X & XII board exams in previous 3 years
    • Participation level in Science Innovation fairs/events
    • Mentor engagement and Alumni engagement

Step 3: Selection and Agreement

  • Selected schools required to enter into Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and Bond with AIM
  • Government schools (Central/State) or local body schools exempted from executing the Bond
  • Communication of final selection through NITI Aayog website

Step 4: Implementation and Setup

  • Schools required to put in place requisite physical infrastructure within 3 to 6 months from date of release of funds
  • Financial support of maximum Rs. 20 lakhs provided over 5 years (Rs. 10 lakhs for establishment, Rs. 10 lakhs for operations)
  • Equipment procurement and lab setup
  • Faculty training and capacity building
